The West African nation of Guinea is now the world’s second-largest producer of bauxite, ahead of China and behind Australia, according to the latest World Bank rankings.
Guinea’s bauxite production increased from 59.6 million tons in 2018 to 70.2 million tons in 2019, according to data analysis from the World Bank’s latest report on commodity market prospects.
Growth of 18% allowed it to grab market share from China.
China’s output last year was almost flat from 2018, or 68.4 million tons of bauxite.
But since 2015, China’s output has barely increased.
Guinea will now compete with Australia, which is currently the world leader, producing more than 105 million tonnes of bauxite in 2019.
By 2029, most of the world’s bauxite production will come from Australia, Indonesia and Guinea, according to Fitch Solutions, a consultancy.
